Newsflash 10/05/08

We do not believe that the New Mass can be “fixed”. The Vatican has issued a number of instructions in recent years in an effort to correct errors and liturgical abuses in the New Mass but these have been ignored by the Scots bishops. To find out more about the construction of the new Mass click here and to explode some of the myths click here before you read the Ottaviani Intervention to educate yourself about the grave concerns of senior churchmen at the time of the proposal to change the Mass.

We urge readers to attend the Traditional Mass. However, it’s not “just” the Mass that we need but the entire ethos of the traditional faith.  We need sound sermons and edifying stories of saintly lives plus teaching about devotional practices in order to properly nourish our souls.  We’re told of cases where - for example - priests are reprimanded for preaching about certain doctrines, such as Hell and for permitting kneeling to receive Holy Communion. At the slightest sign of orthodoxy, Scots priests are persecuted. Thus, we find ourselves compelled to recommend that readers attend the Masses offered by  the traditional priests of the Society of St Pius X who travel every week from England to help us through this time of crisis.  Ignore the false accusation of schism peddled by the Catholic press. Several Vatican statements have made clear that they are not in schism and  that “neither priests nor faithful are excommunicated” by attending SSPX Masses (L’Osservatore Romano, 9/4/08). The SSPX is not “the Church” and it’s not perfect but serious Catholics who regularly attend their Masses quickly come to appreciate that Divine Providence, no less,    has given us the SSPX to see us through this period of turmoil - Deo Gratias!

Catholic Truth welcomes, wholeheartedly, the Pope’s Motu Proprio on the Traditional Mass.  However, several months have passed since the Motu Proprio was issued and we note, with sadness, that the Scottish Bishops have neither facilitated nor promoted the restoration of the “old rite” Mass.

We are unaware of any priests who have made the Traditional rite available in their parishes in response to the Pope’s expressed wish that the Mass be made more widely available.   If and when we hear of priests being willing to offer the traditional Mass, we will inform readers without delay.

In the meantime, please pray for an end to the schismatic spirit exhibited by the Scottish hierarchy and clergy in this matter.

St John Ogilvie, pray for us.
